Take a look at the abandoned barn above. It can still function as a barn but is on the down side of its useful existence. I wonder, how many dining room sets, coffee tables, kitchen tables, sofa and end tables might be lurking in its lumber?
Did you know that just under the top layer of this barn's weathered exterior the wood is bright and alive with all of its original vibrancy only enhanced by its life outdoors? Many structures like this are either left to rot or are torn down and dumped in a landfill. We have another idea of what should be done with this structure once it has passed repair..Re-Claim, Re-Dress, and Re-Use.
Re-Claim by carefully dismantling old decks, sheds, barns and other structures in a way that preserve the structural integrity of the old and distressed wood. The hardware is either refurbished and used in a new project or if too damaged, it is recycled.
Re-Dress by carefully planing, trimming, and sanding the previously used lumber to ensure that the vibrancy of its former life shows through. During this process pains are taken to make sure that the character which time has bestowed upon the wood is not stripped totally from its surface.
Re-Use by fashioning the redressed lumber into functional objects that reflect the lumbers former life. This involves designs suitable to the color and grain of the wood while taking possible voids, knots, and knot holes into account. Of course, there is the sawing and shaping of the pieces to be joined together into usable forms.
Furniture made from old wood has a character and charm that can not be attained from newly cut lumber... small holes, paint and stain crystallized in some of the open grain, and blemishes which add to the overall beauty of the piece. These are small oddities that make the piece truly one of a kind to be treasured and passed down for generations to come.
